Country Garden Landscaping in Tunbridge Wells: Farmhouse Transformation Story
Phase 1
Tunbridge Wells Farmhouse Garden Design: Creating a Unique Outdoor Retreat
When our clients moved into their grand old farmhouse in Tunbridge Wells, they were keen to transform the outdoor spaces into something worthy of the property’s character. They wanted more than just a tidy garden — their vision was for unique, usable areas that complemented the farmhouse setting while reflecting their lifestyle.
This long-term project has been unfolding across every part of the property, but here we’ll share progress from the farmhouse’s rear grounds, where the garden is already taking shape even though the finishing touches are still to come.
Before work began, the farmhouse garden was little more than a blank canvas — uneven levels, tired borders, and spaces that lacked purpose. These images show the garden in its original state, highlighting just how much potential there was to create something special. They set the scene for the transformation that followed, making the contrast with today’s structured, characterful design all the more striking.
Before:
Meeting the Challenges of Summer Landscaping
The hot summer of 2025 made this phase particularly challenging. The hard, dry ground required extra care and preparation, and we had to work smartly to keep momentum through the heat. Despite this, we established the key structural elements of the design: oak sleeper retaining walls, pathways, and large beds that give the garden a strong framework.
Now, with the welcome return of rain, we can move into planting and soft landscaping — the stage that will bring character, colour, and life back to the farmhouse garden.
Creating Flow Around a Farmhouse Setting
A farmhouse garden needs structure as well as charm. We’ve reshaped the ground levels, introduced natural divisions, and laid out pathways that guide you naturally through the space. These design moves respect the scale of the property while ensuring the garden remains practical and inviting.
The finishing touch will come with a decorative self-binding gravel across the pathways once planting is complete — giving the farmhouse garden a crisp, durable finish that blends with its rural surroundings.

Looking Ahead
Even at this mid-stage, the transformation is striking. The farmhouse garden is evolving from a bare, unstructured space into a retreat full of personality — one that balances history with modern function. For our clients, this will soon be an outdoor setting that matches the beauty of their home.
At Greenacre Landscapes, we specialise in designing and building gardens that tell a story — whether for townhouses, modern builds, or historic farmhouses. This Tunbridge Wells project is a great example of how thoughtful design and expert landscaping can breathe new life into traditional spaces.
